Visiting University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre

I went up yesterday to the University College London to the Macmillan Cancer Centre. I was a bit scared and frightened because it had the word cancer in it. I went up with my parents; they are such great support. I entered the building and it was so amazing such friendly people and such great facilities. The centre is for 13-24 years old. This makes me feel much better as I wouldn't want to be stuck with some old people in an adult hospital.

I met two ladies called Kerry and Beth who are people who you can call up whenever if I have any issues and they will be with me throughout the treatment. Kerry, myself and my parents had a long discussion about it all and how people react differently to places like this. I had lots of questions.. mainly if I’d lose my hair. I was told sadly I would lose it all within the first week or a bit more. At that point I felt numb because I love playing with my hair and have been trying to grow it for a long time! I then realised I could have such wigs or such nice hair when it grows back and it’ll be healthy!

I then went in to see the doctor and he told me what Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was and what the treatment is. I shall be having at least 4 months of Chemotherapy and 15 days of steroids. I may need radiotherapy if need be. I have to got to go back at some point for some further scans; the main one is to see if the cancer has spread which is called a PET scan.

I was also told that I am entitled to a 5 day stay in Bournemouth which involves lots of different activities. It is designed for patients with cancer to give them a break :) I was really excited when I heard about it! :)

The first day was a bit scary because I am not used to going to places like this. However everyone was really nice and friendly and I also know I have my family and friends supporting me :)

I am confident that I'll be cancer free by Christmas the latest :)
Here is a link below of what the lymphoma is :)
